What it takes
- Credential
- Idaho Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT) license from DOPL.
- Before you start
- No experience requirement stated in the rule. A board-approved training program is required.
- Training
- Successful completion of a board-approved training program.
- Exam
- Practical examination using University of Southern California (USC) test procedures or other procedures the board approves. Exam scores are valid for one year. Exam provider details not confirmed.
- Renewal
- License renews annually. Every two years the tester must complete an 8-hour refresher course; it must be in person and board-approved (rule text marked effective 7-1-26).
- Test kit
- State rule says to use calibrated equipment but gives no interval. Water systems set their own (Coeur d'Alene and Meridian require calibration records on file).
- Fees
- Rule caps fees at $25 application, $30 per year license, $35 reinstatement. DOPL announced reduced licensing fees in January 2025, so actual amounts may be lower.
